Vico Magistretti designed Atollo in 1977, and it has evolved through time to represent the ideal table lamp. Atollo won the Compasso d’Oro in 1979 and dramatically altered how people view the traditional abat-jour. Its geometric components, the cylinder, cone, and hemisphere, gave rise to a decorative and necessary object at the same time. Disassociated from its historical context by current fashions, it has since come to be recognized as an emblem of Italian design.
